There’s nothing more fun than a road trip. Whether it’s a three-day weekend, taking a week-long vacation, or hitting the road for a few months in a motorhome, it’s a BIG world we live in, and there’s A LOT to see!

The Three-Day Weekend Road Trip In the Southeast: Charleston to Savannah

Charleston to Savannah is a perfect, easy roadtrip to take- there’s so much to see- too many historical sites to list- a leisurely drive, and absolutely amazing food!

Day 1- Charleston: Things to do include visits toThe Battery and White Point Garden, Waterfront Park; shopping in Charleston City Market and along King Street; explore the historic downtown area by taking a carriage tour or walking tour, and of course plan to do some eating! If you’re looking for a refined, classic Charleston lunch establishment, try Magnolias. If it’s barbecue you’re after, Rodney Scott’s BBQ is an excellent choice. Whether you go for homemade soups and sandwiches at Five Loaves, or an epic slice of Coconut Cake from Peninsula Grill, you definitely won’t leave Charleston hungry!

Day 2-The Road to Savannah: Charleston to Savannah is just about a two hour drive. You’ll want to take your time- there are several great places to stop along the way. If you get an early start, take your breakfast to go, and head to Edisto Island. Instead of following your GPS, take Route 162. After you pass through the town of Hollywood, you’ll take a left onto Route 174. You’ll pass through a tunnel of live oaks, then come to a bridge over the Intercostal with spectacular views in all directions. When you get to Edisto, try to time your visit with low tide, because if you do, you’re going to be rewarded with a chance to see the incredible “boneyard beach” of Botany Bay. If you’d rather sleep in or get to Savannah earlier in the day, plan to make a stop in Historic Beaufort for lunch and stroll the shops of downtown Beaufort and the waterfront.

Day 2- Savannah: Arriving in Savannah mid to late afternoon will leave you with plenty of time to check into your hotel and do a little exploring before dinner. Walk the cobblestone streets of beautiful River Street, but keep your wits about you- the stone stairs are no joke! Like Charleston, there are endless options for an amazing Savannah dining experience. For an elegant dinner in a historic colonial mansion, try The Olde Pink House. Be advised, though, and make a reservation if you can. Otherwise you can try a table or the bar in the tavern. You may have to wait, but it will be totally worth it. A fun way to end the night is with a ghost tour. There are both walking tours and bus/car tours available (we even saw a hearse!), and the rich and yes, creepy history of Savannah is truly fascinating.

Day 3- Savannah: Have a light breakfast, because you need to go to Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room for lunch! The restaurant is cash only, and they don’t take reservations. Make sure to join the line by 11 a.m. for what many consider to be one of the best lunches in town. Visit Forsyth Park, The Jepson Center for the Arts, Broughton Street for shopping, and definitely don’t miss a stroll down Jones Street- considered one of the prettiest streets in America.
